What’s this about?
This is Peter and Maureen Scargill's Spanish website. We live in Galera in Andalusia (for clarity, that is the English spelling - Mid-Spain they spell it Andalucia and pronounce it "And-a-loo-thee-a").
We've had a home in Spain for more than 14 years and it is now our permanent base though we retain a small home in the UK.
Find out more about this by reading through the blog entries, menu-accessible pages and archives if you're interested! Welcome to Peter and Maureen's Spanish website.

I’ve just realised I’ve not been maintaining my Google photos properly – by default you needed a link to see most of them – so for those of you who want to see more photos – or better quality etc… head on over to http://picasaweb.google.com/peterscargill and they should all be there sorted into albums.

Hi there.. The Internet now works properly. I have to say GENERALLY it’s been fairly reliable but because of the less than perfect mains power situation I’m going to end up putting in a spare router – just to be safe. Yes, Galera is a nice village – like most rural areas far too much cement lying around but it’s a great place to use as a base for travel.
Travelling costs – well, our biggest problem is that Maureen is a teacher, so holidays coincide with school holidays which means you pay through the nose for air-fares, but other than that, its quite reasonable. Rural Spain can be more expensive than the UK for many things – on the other hand a night out is less expensive! Cuidad Real – no- never done that – let me know how that goes for you… we use Murcia and it’s a couple of hours drive. When we first setup we had vandals in the place but you’ll note on the web there are now bars on the door when we’re away…. I think it’s inevitable that in a bad recession, toe-rags will look further to steal TVs etc… but overall here crime seems to be low and everyone seems to be pleasant – at least, thats’ our experience. Let us know if you move in.
Hi Peter
I just wanted to say thank you for your blog (on spainexpat) and site as the internet is very important to us also, as is the telephone, having a wife who seams to share the same an ear addiction as yours. I am pinging you as we are hoping to purchase a cave house in Galera over the coming month/s so any help or direction would be appreciated.
Is your internet now working properly? as I see you were having problems back in 08 also.
We have google streeted this place over and over and love it already, so we do expect to find a home for us there. I hope you do not mind me asking but I would value your comments on your ‘trip’ so far…
….How has it been for you so far both in the travelling cost and your veiw of the area, now compared to the begining? If you could do it all over again would you have bought some where else? and we are planning to fly into Cuidad Real as the airport prices on the coast are very expensive (wifey works in a school so it always like this for us)have you used this way and are the roads good if I use the direct route. And lastly…thieft has this proved to be a problem or is it quite safe due to it remoteness?
Thanks again for your site and blog comments, if we buy will definantly say hi
Regards Adrian & Liz
