What’s this about?
This is Peter and Maureen Scargill's Spanish website. We live in Galera in Andalusia (for clarity, that is the English spelling - Mid-Spain they spell it Andalucia and pronounce it "And-a-loo-thee-a").

We've had a home in Spain for more than 14 years and it is now our permanent base though we retain a small home in the UK.

Find out more about this by reading through the blog entries, menu-accessible pages and archives if you're interested! Welcome to Peter and Maureen's Spanish website.

Week Two and All is Well

A quiet day today… this morning, Maureen went downtown to help at the dog shelter, I stayed at home and worked on my controllers. I decided for once to take a proper holiday and it is paying off – I’m feeling quite relaxed.

This evening we sat outside and enjoyed a nice tapas in the Pergola – despite forecasts of rain the weather has been great. Not stunningly hot, maybe 25c but with the sun blasting I took the opportunity to supplement the tan for a while. This has to be the first trip we’ve done where there are no pressing repairs to attend to – marvellous.

TV is on, she’s watching soaps and I’m just putting the finishing touches on some code that has been months in development and which is now about to get it’s first trivial job – watering the plants.  Thanks to a friendly local policemen we now know what to do with the speeding fines and it turns out we got the early payment discount on one, once we figured out how to use the Spanish website. It appears the back route to Murcia, despite looking innocent is riddled with police with cameras as others have suffered the same fate. Once bitten twice shy (or in my case, twice bitten…).

The plan tomorrow, weather permitting is to leave the car at home and do our jobs for the day in the village on foot. Only thing is.. the weather, right now at 10pm is changing rapidly…

A Weekend in Galera

As always, photos published in this blog can generally be enlarged by clicking on them. Enjoy.

La Posa tapasThe end of another week – and what a nice couple of days. Yesterday Maureen headed off for the “4a Ruta De La Tapa De Galera” tapas competition in the morning while I got some quiet work done in the cave and put up some new lighting – though this isn’t permanent stuff as I want to bring some much better lights over next time we’re here – I’m short of basic materials like power supplies after a few incidents (ok, explosions).

Last night we once again joined others in the town to check out the Tapas competition but it turns out it only happens during the day – so instead we went off to one bar offering 14 bottles of beer in a bucket of ice for 9 Euros!! Can’t be bad.

Currillo tapasBasically the idea is commercial – you go have a beer or a coke (some say not coffee) and get free tapas – you have a sheet of paper for 6 bars and in order to put your vote in for the best, you have to go to all 6 – it’s basically just a way to drum up business. The drinks are cheap, the food is free so everyone wins.

imageToday we went down town to do the afternoon session – if I never drink a coke again it won’t be too soon. The winner – La Posa – a combination of decent grub and fast service. And the loser? Bar Cazador – quite the opposite – the most unappealing tapas we’d been served to date – and the service was awful. Like many of the Brits we’d never been to that bar before and it doesn’t look like we’ll be back.

All in all a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
