Driving around the town itself, Aguilas down at the coast looks fairly average for an over-populated Spanish seaside resort.  However, once you get down to the beach, parts of it perk up nicely. This isn’t the first time we’ve taken this trip and it won’t  be the last. The waterfront is, IMHO much nicer than some other areas.

For those of you not familiar with this area, a map…

Looking at the above, we are in Southern Spain, what, less than a couple of hours down the coast from Alicante Airport and maybe 90 minutes away from our home town of Galera (all of this by car).

Looking at the map, alternatives to Aguilas include Garucha and Mojacar a short distance to the south, or a little further north you have Puerto De Mazzaron, Cartagena and ultimately only half an hour south of Alicante you have Los Alcazares and similar.

Indeed no shortage of sea front areas on the Southeast coast of Spain at all, but having been to all of these and many other seaside destinations, we quite enjoyed our trip to Aguilas because there are areas of beach and seafront protected by alcoves and hence immune to the kind of waves you might find Mojacar (not to mention rocky beaches), or jellyfish you might find up near Los Alcazares. The beach is soft sand, the water is warm, parts of the waterfront are sheltered from wind and excessive waves and the scenery is lovely.

We’re planning a multi-day trip to the coast with our neighbours in September (2019) and I’m sure that Aguilas will be one of our stopping off points.
