This is Peter and Maureen Scargill's Spanish website. We live in Galera in Andalusia (for clarity, that is the English spelling - Mid-Spain they spell it Andalucia and pronounce it "And-a-loo-thee-a").

We've had a home in Spain for more than 14 years and it is now our permanent base though we retain a small home in the UK.

A New Adventure up the Spanish Coast

Continuing our tradition of travelling up and down Spain, last week we took an early anniversary vacation up in Dénia, in the province of Alicante, stopping in at Bullas on the way up and Benidorm on the way back. Our 3-night trip was short but sweet and with the decline of Covid here in Spain we’re at the end of outdoor mask-wearing and feeling more “normal” than we have for over a year now. Add to that, very pleasant weather in the upper 20’s heading up to 30C.

Dénia

With the above in mind, some highlights of our trip: Bullas is a medium-size town on the way from here in Galera to the east coast along the RM730, maybe 100km notheast from here. To the casual observer not entering the town, the most obvious feature is the solar installation along the main road, but once you get off the main road and go into town, it has it’s moments, this roundabout not being one of them but it had a welcome sign so I had to take a photo.

Late Tuesday morning, we popped into a random cafe which turned out to be a winner, inexpensive and with friendly staff.

Our brief vist to Bullas over we continued straight on, up via the E15/A7 to Dénia with just enough time for a walk around town including a rather interesting tunnel visit before heading off to a nice Indian restaurant along the sea front.

The Rani Palace indian restaurant is along the CV7301 at the Cuadrado Curvo roundabout, a prime spot along the sea-front. It is only one of MANY restaurants in the area but the one we chose and we’re very pleased we did.

Wednesday morning we took off for a spin slightly down the coast to Xábia where we discovered Overseas Supermercados. I’m not one for pretending I’m in a hot version of Britain and stores like this charge through the nose for “British” goods, more now than ever thanks to Brexit. However I do like the occasional Greggs pastie (having made one of their first rectangular molds back in the 1970s when still working in our family engineering business). So as we were in the area, we popped in for supplies.

Overseas Supermercados - good selection but ridiculously overpriced

With prices at least twice those of similar products in Lidl, we bought only the odd essential. I pity the Brits who spend serious money in such stores, unaware of the alternatives.

With shopping out of the way, we headed off to an out of (Xábia) town “Art Garden Centre” – and what a visual treat.

This particular garden centre has the most fabulous art not to mention being a good garden centre. Hopefully the photos speak for themselves.

Wednesday night we walked down to the beach – and what a sunset. Our apartment was near the edge of Dénia and the small restaurant/shopping area kept us away from the crowds but with plenty to see and enjoy.

Thursday before returning to the pool, we took a walk around town and the sea front – there is money in Dénia and a great mix of the old and new.

And with that, an afternoon in our pool and a quiet night before heading off down the coast (via Benidorm for lunch) and back home late on Friday, taking lots of photos along the way – a lot more than I can reasonably fit in here. Would we do all of this again? Most certainly.
